As mentioned earlier, part of my motivation for obtaining an MBA is to help with career growth. There are some roles in the business world that require an MBA. There are many other invaluable benefits from obtaining an MBA-one of which is leadership development.
Leadership skills are becoming more important for employers. One question often asked in interviews is “tell me about your leadership and management experience.” Some colleges are even offering majors in leadership.
UNC offers a program with a leadership focus from their Kenan-Flagler Business School. Before beginning the MBA program, UNC asks you to provide a survey to the people you work with. The survey asks your fellow co-workers to evaluate your leadership and management skills. Once you begin the program you can focus on the areas of leadership that you need the most improvement in. There are classes, coaching sessions, simulations and more that help you polish your leadership skills. You can learn more about the program here: http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/~/media/Files/documents/MBA%20Brochure_singlepgs_Web_final_070914.pdf
Finally, I will leave you with a quote from John Quincy Adams. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
I wonder what my co-workers will say about my leadership skills…
